Vaping is not harmless, at the end of the day you are inhaling something into your mouth and your lungs with different ingredients and chemicals. Studies have shown it to be healthier than cigarettes, but no study has come out to say that it’s harmless. It’s still in the early stages of vaping and E-Liquid’s life and long term testing hasn’t been done, so it’s unknown what the complete list of side effects are, but we have some more obvious ones that we can talk about here.
The first one you’ll realize is the dry mouth you get from vaping. Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin are the culprits for dry mouth. They are hygroscopic meaning that they absorb water.
You can use products like biotene or similar products which help to resolve dry mouth. It is important to pay attention to any dry mouth you may experience as oral bacteria thrive in dry conditions. If you’re vaping it’s even more important to stay hydrated.
It’s recommended to drink water and also to have some electrolytes. Drinking copious amounts of water without adequate electrolytes will not help resolve your feeling of being thirsty. Add some salt in your meals or purchase some electrolyte supplements.
It’s possible to have a sore throat while vaping. If you’re experiencing a sore throat, it’s important to analyze your device and your liquids and find out what could be causing this issue. Some people have issues with Propylene Glycol(PG) in high percentages and it’s recommended to try out a blend with less(30% or less) or no PG.
This can also be caused by just the flavorings used in the e-liquid as you might have a reaction to some of the chemicals in that e liquid brand. In any case, try some new vape liquid and see if that helps.
It can also be a result of the coils you’re using in your vape device. Some people have an allergy to nickel, which is seen in some types of coils.
Those 2 options should lead you to a resolution of this problem if you’re experiencing sore throat.
Coughing while vaping are usually most common with new vapers, even if you smoked cigarettes before. Most people we’ve seen who just start vaping find themselves coughing. It’s a different experience than smoking cigarettes and the vapor is much more dense than when smoking a cigarette.
There are also many different types of vape devices which provide a different vaping experience. Some have a tight draw, some have a loose draw which are meant for direct to lung inhaling instead of mouth-to-lung like a cigarette.
If you have an airy vape device with a lot of airflow, you don’t want to vape this like a cigarette with small puffs. The airflow is meant to be taken advantage of and puffed on harder than a cigarette.
This can also occur just because the nicotine level is too high for you or the wattage of the device is too high. It’ll take some trial and error. The first week of vaping is finding out what works best for you in terms of the type of vape device that you like, the type of flavors of e liquid you enjoy and the vaping style.
Headaches can occur for a few reasons as a result of vaping. If you were smoking cigarettes right before switching to vaping, this can be a reason why. You may be experiencing some withdrawal symptoms from smoking cigarettes, though the nicotine in your vape liquids should help alleviate some of those symptoms.
Another reason could be dehydration. We talked about vaping causing you dry mouth, well it comes up as a possible issue here with headaches. Make sure to stay hydrated and consume electrolytes. They’ll keep you feeling better.
Weight Gain or Weight Loss from Vaping
There is no current evidence of any weight gain or weight loss as a result of vaping. Vape products are not considered to have any scientific efficacy for weight loss.
We have had some people write to us though that it helps with their cravings for sweets as a result of enjoying some e liquid they vape. Having the ability to vape different fruit flavors, candy flavors and dessert flavors might help you with your cravings, but your mileage may vary. Others have said that it makes them want it more.
In conclusion, there are no scientific studies which show it helps or harms weight loss and your experience will depend on many different factors.
Chest Pain From Vaping
We’ve had a few people mention that they have chest pain from vaping. The exact reason why is unknown at this point, but it can be a result of any of the following:
High Propylene Glycol percentages in your vape juice
Diketones(Diacetyl, Acetyl Propionyl, Acetoin)
Certain Flavoring Chemicals
The reason why those possibilities were listed was a result of people coming to us with these issues and us recommending the best e liquid we can think of in terms of not having these kinds of chemicals and they told us that it helped them with their problems. Your mileage may vary, but we figured we’d try to give some insight.
Of course if you’ve tried different things and you’re still having continued chest pain from vaping, you should consult a doctor immediately
