With all the controversy around vaping, we thought we’d go into some pros and cons and go over some of the studies that have come out about vaping as well as other details.
Let’s start off with some of the benefits of vaping as compared to smoking cigarettes.
Well the most obvious is going to be the difference in smell. A cigarette smoker generally has a car and clothes that reek of cigarette smell. The smell of cigarettes stick and linger.
Vaping generally doesn’t have a smell that lingers around, unless you spill E Liquid on your clothes or it leaks in your pants. The vapor itself tends to go away after the smoke has been cleared of the area. You’ll find that the smell doesn’t stick to your clothes or your car unless you spill the liquid somewhere, which in that case can be washed out very easily.
With vaping you have much more control over your habits. You can control the level of nicotine you’d like, the type of device you’d like to use and whether you’re going to be vaping mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung, giving you more flexibility in terms of options that will allow you to hopefully quit smoking and nicotine altogether. With vaping you can start at a comparable nicotine level to cigarettes and slowly lower your nicotine levels down from 50mg salt nicotine liquids all the way down to 1.5mg nicotine vape liquids and eventually to 0mg.
Along with different nicotine levels, you also have the vast variety of flavors to try that will allow you to find something you will enjoy. After you start vaping, you’ll find that cigarettes taste terrible. Generally what we’ve seen is people will smoke cigarettes and vape at the same time as they try to quit and after some time they’ll realize that their cigarettes taste terrible and they can vape something flavorful and enjoyable instead and still get the nicotine and smoking sensation that they desire.
We can’t say vaping is harmless, but Public Health England did an independent review of e-cigarettes and vaping and found it to be 95% less harmful than cigarettes. They officially support vaping as an alternative to smoking. They mentioned that vaping is of negligible risk to bystanders.
Professor Ann McNeil, author and Professor of Tobacco Addiction at King’s College London said the following: ”
It’s of great concern that smokers still have such a poor understanding about what causes the harm from smoking. When people smoke tobacco cigarettes, they inhale a lethal mix of 7,000 smoke constituents, 70 of which are known to cause cancer. “
With studies like this supporting vaping, it’s hard to say that it’s not safer than smoking cigarettes.
We marked Safety as a benefit, but now we’re going to play devil’s advocate and also mention it as a risk. Do the studies indicate that it is less harmful than smoking? Absolutely, but we also are in the early stages of vaping and it is still something that you are inhaling into your lungs. When we compare them to cigarettes, it’s easy to say that it’s safer, but at the end of the day it’s even safer to quit completely. Keep that in mind when you’re vaping that it’s not completely harmless and if that bothers you then you should think of a route to quitting smoking or vaping completely eventually and use vaping as a tool down that path and not the end of the road.
Vaping can be cheaper than smoking cigarettes depending on your style of vaping and how often you do it, but it can still be expensive. Keep in mind your budget and spend accordingly. It’s easy to turn this into a hobby and spend hundreds of dollars without realizing.
Not that turning it into a hobby is a bad thing, as it can be enjoyable and fun, but we encourage you to stay responsible with your intentions and financial budget. Some vape devices use a lot of liquid and some people use up to 60ml of liquid per day and you can see how that adds up.
These are just some of the most important points that we thought were important to discuss, but the discussion continues for you and what you think is important. We all have different goals and purposes in your life and you need to find out what part vaping will take in your life. It has helped many people transition away from cigarettes to eventually quitting. For some it’s a hobby they really enjoy and for others it’s just something they like to do when they’re out with friends.
